"Women of Faith" is a one-hour documentary about the relationship between women and the Catholic Church. The film festures interviews with 5 Catholic sisters (3 Maryknoll sisters and 2 Poor Clare nuns), a former nun now living as an out lesbian, and a female Catholic priest, ordained in a secret ceremony. Each woman brings her own perspective to the table in discussing the role of women in the Church, the various controversies and positions that have scarred the Church in recent years, and ultimately, how they reconcile their faith with their sociopolitical beliefs.
The film was made over a period of 6 years in various locations in Massachusetts and New York. Director Rebecca M. Alvin has created a quiet, thoughtful film that explores women's views of the Church and of religion in general. This documentary is a discussion-starter and would be great for anyone interested in women's issues or in the various issues around organized religion, as well as for those interested specifically in the Catholic Church.
